No one wants to live with blurred vision and not be able to see each day as clearly as possible and thanks to our
Fulton optometrist and Orthokeratology (ortho-k), you don’t have to. At Maple Lawn Eye Care Center, our experts perform a comprehensive eye exam that will detect any vision disorders you may have that are preventing you from seeing as clearly as you can. One of these disorders is astigmatism which is a very common vision condition that causes blurred vision due to one of two conditions. In some cases, the cornea, which is the clear front cover of the eye, has an irregular shape or, astigmatism can also be caused by the curvature of the lens inside the eye. An irregular shaped cornea, or lens, prevents light from focusing properly on your retina. As a result, vision becomes blurred from whatever distance. Orthokeratology is a non-surgical procedure that involves you wearing a series of specially designed rigid contact lenses that gradually reshape the curvature of your cornea over time.

Research shows that most people have a certain degree of astigmatism but with minor amounts, treatment is usually not required since vision is not affected. In patients with larger amounts, however, astigmatism can cause distorted or blurred vision, eye discomfort and headaches. Our
Fulton optometrist will consult with you and explain that astigmatism often happens with other vision conditions such as farsightedness and nearsightedness. All together these vision conditions are known as refractive errors because they change how the eyes bend or "refract" light. Usually present from birth, there is no known cause of astigmatism and it can be hereditary. The level of astigmatism can also decrease or worsen as a child grows. According to The Orthokeratology Academy of America, studies from all over the world have indicated that Ortho-K can keep your children’s nearsightedness from getting worse. A comprehensive optometric exam with our
Fulton optometrist will include the proper testing for refractive errors that can be treated with orthokeratology.
Ortho-k is a painless, non-invasive procedure and the series of rigid contact lenses used are gas permeable and worn overnight. While you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape you cornea (the front surface of your eye) so you can see clearly the following day after you wake up and remove the lenses. Ortho-K corneal refractive therapy lenses are also a great vision solution for outdoor sports like soccer, swimming, football and running since glasses or contact lenses may not allow for optimum performance. For those too young for LASIK surgery, orthokeratology vision correction contact lenses are an excellent choice to meet the need for natural unassisted vision.
