This is an eye condition where one eye becomes more dominant and the other eye is not really used effectively by the brain. This creates poor eye teaming skills and patients have difficulty coordinating the eyes with body movement and balance. This type of visual confusion can lead to double vision, problems with movement, and even interference with thinking. When the brain suppresses the visual input from the other brain for a long enough time, amblyopia will result.
During treatment for amblyopia our Silver Spring MD eye doctor needs to get the brain to pay attention to the visual signals of the weaker eye. Often this problem can be corrected by just wearing glasses. It is not an uncommon eye occurrence, with as many as 3 children out of every 100 being affected by this problem. It is now believed that older patients over 16 are almost as treatable as younger children with this condition. Signs of amblyopia include misalignment of the eyes; poor coordination; squinting; or poor eye contact. With amblyopia, the eyes need to be retrained to have greater coordination, and the visual system must relearn how to make appropriate adjustments. This vision therapy treatment can begin at any age – even during infancy. We use treatment using lenses and prisms.
